Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Thomas Burned by the Fire, Fall 67-49

Jason Hendrix | Sports Information Director | @JasonHendrixSID

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Thomas University women's basketball team struggled to get the offense rolling tonight as they fell on the road to (RV) Southeastern 67-49.  The loss drops Thomas to 1-4 all-time against Southeastern with their only victory coming in the team's debut season (2013-2014).

While the Lady Night Hawks scored the opening basket of the game, the Fire (14-3, 4-1 TSC) responded and blazed out on an 8-2 run to take the 8-4 advantage with 5:23 left in the opening quarter.  While Thomas pulled within one, 12-11, on a lay-up by Taron Bright with 2:16 left, SEU closed the first frame on a 6-0 run to take the 18-11 lead.

Southeastern's lead continued to grow as Thomas went scoreless the first six and half minutes of the second quarter.  The Fire pushed their lead to 13, 25-12, at its height with a 7-0 to start to the second frame.  Heading into the locker at intermission, SEU held the 27-18 gap.

A foul-plagued first half continued to place its effect in the second half of play as Thomas' leading scorer and rebounder, Bra'shey Ali, spent much of the half on the bench with foul trouble.  The Fire took advantage of this, outscoring Thomas 24-13 in the third to push their lead to 51-31.

Thomas (7-7, 2-2 TSC) showed signs of improvement and grit winning the fourth quarter.  The Lady Night Hawks outscored the Fire 18-16 in the final frame, but came up short as they fell 67-49.

Junior Rayven Thomas led Thomas with a double-double recording 14 points and 12 rebounds.  Classmate Taron Bright narrowly missed her first double-double as a Lady Night Hawks scoring 10 points while bringing down nine boards.  SEU's Alyssa Ramos led all scorers with 17.

The Lady Night Hawks return to action on Saturday, Jan. 16 when they travel to Babson Park, Fla., to face Webber International in Sun Conference action. Tipoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
