MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Dating back to 2004, the Thomas University women's soccer team did something they have not done in the team's past six matchups against Auburn Montgomery, win. The first half was the difference in the Lady Night Hawks' upset victory over highly favored AUM.
Thomas jumped on the board early and often in the first half scoring all three of their goals.
In the 10th minute, sophomore midfielder
Linnea Roivas scored the first goal for Thomas, the first Lady Night Hawk goal of the 2015 season. The Norrkoping, Sweden, native received a touch-in pass from senior defender
Adrianna Johnson, side stepped to her left, and fired a left-footed shot between the AUM keeper's legs.
Sixteen minutes later, senior
Mackenzie Dolan increased the Lady Night Hawks' lead to 2-0 netting her 15th goal of her collegiate career to the lower right corner of the net. Johnson picked up her second assist of the match heading the ball towards Dolan who one-timed the shot into the back of the net.
Thomas would capitalize again with five minutes remaining in the opening half. Freshman forward
Dana Blough split several Lady Warhawks heading to the box, and at the last second pushed the ball back to
Ciera McGriff-Duncan who fired off the shot, scoring her first collegiate career goal. The goal was the third and final goal of the match for the Lady Night Hawks.
With just over two minutes remaining in the half, Auburn Montgomery kept things interesting when midfielder Julia Losert netted AUM's first goal of the season to cut TU's lead to 3-1 at intermission.
The Lady Warhawks outshot Thomas in the second half 11-to-6, pushing the tempo in the final 15 minutes of the contest. In the 77th minute, AUM produced a glimmer of hope when Hannah Long netted the Orange and White's second goal of the contest.
Thomas held onto the 3-2 lead for the remainder of the game where Lady Night Hawk keeper
Sara-Ann Hartley collected six of her eight saves.
"Good team win today," stated head coach
Julie Orlowski. "We are really starting to see the pieces of the puzzle come together. Adrianna [Johnson] and Olivia [Taylor] were fantastic today. Adrianna was dangerous every time she touched the ball, and Olivia did a lot of the dirty work in midfield. It was really good to see the hard work the freshmen are putting in pay dividends on the field. Blough's assist to McGriff-Duncan is a sign of great things to come.
Katy Hanscomb handled her first collegiate start very well."
With the win, Thomas improves to 1-2 on the year while (RV) Auburn Montgomery drops to 0-1.
