Singer’s 5 RBIs Leads in Upset over #3 Northwood

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Behind the 3-for-3, five RBI performance of center fielder Brandon Singer, the Thomas University baseball team upset third-ranked Northwood University this afternoon in their 11-10 victory.  The win snapped the Seahawks' 18 game winning streak and also halted their series sweep streak at five.

The Seahawks jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first.  Designated hitter Keivan Berges lined a double to the right-center gap to drive in Carlos Contreras who previously reached on a two-out single.  The Night Hawks would tie the game in the bottom of the first and then take the 2-1 lead in the second.  Singer's first hit of the game came during the second when he hit a single up the middle.  He was moved to second when first baseman Brent Slaughter hit a grounder to first.  After second baseman Austin Corbitt reached on a walk, shortstop Jake Desuyo gave the Night Hawks' the lead with a single to left.

While Northwood temporarily tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the third, the Night Hawks regained the lead when Singer crushed a three-run homer over the right field fence to put TU up 5-2.  In the top of the fourth, a passed ball cut Northwood's deficit to 5-3.  Over the next two innings, the Night Hawks would score three runs to go up 8-3.

In the sixth, the Seahawks made it a one run, 8-7, game scoring four runs.  Center fielder Casey Mullenix plated three of Northwood's runs with a three-run homer over the left field fence.  Thomas increased their lead to 10-7 in the seventh when Singer sent his second homerun of the day over the left field fence.  The two-run shot gave Singer his fifth RBI of the day.  The Hunter Green and White would score their 11th and final run of the contest in the eighth to go up 11-7.

The Seahawks attempted a ninth inning rally when Mullenix hit his second three-run homer of the game to cut the TU lead to 11-10.  Northwood's rally was halted when reliever Justin Hicks struck out second baseman Gaddy Mundo to end the game.

TU's starter Tate Lambert picked up the win while Northwood's Patrick Barrington was credited with the loss.

Thomas improves to 19-23-1, 10-13 TSC, on the year while No. 3 Northwood drops 37-8, 21-3 TSC.

The Night Hawks return to action on Tues., April 14, when they travel to Americus, Ga., to face NCAA Division II foe Georgia Southwestern in a single game set.  First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
