TU Picks Up Season Sweep and 14th Win

Jason Hendrix | Sports Information Director | @JasonHendrixSID

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball team picked up the season sweep this afternoon with a 7-6 come-from-behind win over the Warriors of Webber International University.

The Night Hawks jumped out to the early 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first over the visiting Warriors.  Shortstop Jake Desuyo led the game off with a single up the middle and then advanced to second on a one-out liner to left by right fielder Casey Mannion.  Three pitches later, designated hitter Josh Bruijn drove in the first run of the game with a bloop single to shallow right, scoring Desuyo for the 1-0 Night Hawk lead.  Catcher Kaleb Holbrook flied out to center before left fielder Jeremy Crosby landed a seeing-eye single through the gap at second and third to score Mannion for the second Night Hawk run of the inning.

Webber temporarily cut TU's lead to 2-1 in the top of the second before Thomas regained its two run, 3-1, lead in the bottom frame. In the top of the third, the Warriors took the lead from the hosts, scoring three runs on three hits off TU's starter Neal Hunter.

Leading 4-3 over the Night Hawks, the Warriors' pitching staff went to work pitching three scoreless innings heading in to the bottom of the sixth.  Thomas tied the game at 4-4 when Desuyo hit into a fielder's choice, scoring third baseman Matthew Brady.

In the top of the seventh, WIU would regain the lead on the first pitch of the inning when designated hitter Taylor Reeves crushed a solo shot over the left field fence off reliever Justin Hicks.  Three batters later, the Warriors would take the 6-4 lead when TU's first baseman Brent Slaughter overthrew a pickoff, run down attempt at third, scoring Dylon Ping.

Down, but not out, the Night Hawks powered back in the bottom of the eighth to score the tying and winning runs in their 7-6 come-from-behind victory.  Desuyo started the inning off reaching on an infield single.  With two outs in the inning, the Night Hawks began the rally.  Mannion drove in TU's fifth run of the game with a double to the left-center gap and then scored the tying run on an error by Trey Huss.  Huss dropped a chopper hit by Bruijn that would have ended the inning.  Still with two outs in the inning and runners on first and second, Crosby knocked in the winning run with a single to deep left.

Hicks (2-1, 1 save) picked up with the win while WIU's Nathan Burke suffered the loss.

Thomas improves to 14-13-1, 6-8 TSC, while Webber drops to 20-16, 5-10 TSC.

The Night Hawks return to action on Tues., March 24 when they travel to Cochran, Ga., to face Middle Georgia State in a single game set.  First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. from Stuckey Field.
