THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University women's basketball team continues their post-season journey into the Fab Four of the Sun Conference tournament on Friday, Feb. 24, as they travel to Miami Gardens, Fla., to face off with top-seeded and regular season champion St. Thomas University (25-4, 17-1 TSC).
The Lady Night Hawks, who finished the regular season with an 11-16, 8-10 TSC, record, are the fifth-seeded team in this year's tournament. Thomas picked up its twelfth win this past Tuesday upsetting the fourth-seeded Lady Eagles from Embry-Riddle 72-61. This win was the first post-season victory in program's short history.
St. Thomas enters Friday's contest on a 10-game winning streak and the No. 23 ranking in the NAIA. Earlier this week, STU beat eighth-seeded Warner University 66-52 to advance to the semifinal. The Lady Bobcats have won both meetings this season between the Lady Night Hawks taking their Jan. 31 meeting in Miami Gardens 80-48 and then narrowly escaping a triple overtime thriller 80-78 on Feb. 19.
The Hunter Green and White are led by
Courtney Saunds, who ranks 16th in NAIA Division II in points per game (19.25). Saunds is also the team leader in assists (2.43 apg), blocks (0.89 bpg), and steals (2.29 spg), while
Bria Joyner-Williams leads Thomas on the boards with 7.29 rebounds per contest. Saunds has amassed 539 points this season which places her 18th overall in NAIA Division II.
Two Lady Bobcats are averaging double-figures in scoring, Dannisha Pierce (20.3 ppg) and Claudia Martin (12.8 ppg). During the 2014-2015 season, Pierce has been named the NAIA National Player of the Week on two occasions while being named the Sun Conference Player of the Week eight times. Guard Antishia Wright leads the Lady Bobcats with 0.96 blocks per contest and 5.08 assists per outing.
Pierce is averaging a team and national best 4.655 steals per game and has collected the most total steals this season in NAIA Division II (135).
Friday's tip is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Fernandez Family Center on St. Thomas' campus.
