THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University softball team's eight game winning streak was snapped this afternoon as No. 4 Lindsey Wilson College remained undefeated sweeping the Lady Night Hawks 3-1 and 6-3.
In game one, the Blue Raiders scored the first run of the contest in the top of the third inning. Sydney Fourman reached on a five pitch walk and then advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brittney Graves. The Blue Raiders then took the 1-0 lead on a double to shallow left field by Jenna Firestein.
The Lady Night Hawks responded in the bottom frame of the inning to tie the game at 1-1. Second baseman
Kayla Johnson started the inning off with a double down the left field line. Shortstop
Lindsey Young then beat out an infield bunt to put runners on the corners. Thomas would score their lone run of the game three pitches later on a double steal. Young first charged to second to draw the Blue Raiders' attention off Johnson at third. Once the throw was made, Johnson charged to plate to score.
Lindsey Wilson would knock the go ahead and winning runs in during the top of the sixth. Center fielder Chelsea Showers led the inning off with a double to the center field wall. Showers would advance to third on a sacrifice fly to deep left. On a 2-2 pitch, LWC's Bailey Mize delivered the go-ahead run with a single to center, scoring Showers. Amanda Trampe, who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning, would score on a sacrifice fly.
Thomas' starting pitcher
Katie Lopes (3-1) was credited with her first loss of the season while LWC's Lyndsey Parden picked up the win.
In game two, LWC quickly picked up three runs in the top of the first. Showers reached on a fielder's choice in her first at bat of the game and then scored on a two-run homer by Andrea Whelan. Up 2-0, the Blue Raiders would plate an unearned run later in the inning to go up 3-0. Trampe reached on an error by TU's
Danielle Lower and then came around to score when Mize launched a triple into the right field corner.
The Hunter Green and White responded in the bottom of the first to cut LWC's lead to 3-1. Earlier in the inning, Johnson reached on an error and then came around to score when
Chelsea Carter lined a double to the right-center field gap.
The Blue Raiders went on to score three more runs, two in the fourth and one in the fifth, to take the 6-1 lead over the Lady Night Hawks. Down but not out, the Lady Night Hawks attempted a rally in the bottom of the seventh to plate two runs. Johnson and
Rachel Hoeft hit back-to-back solo homers to cut LWC's lead to 6-3. While the comeback was valiant in nature, Thomas could not overcome LWC's gap and fell at the hands of the Blue Raiders. Lindsey Wilson's Casey Bryan picked up the win while TU's
Ashley Chapman suffered the loss.
"We faced a very good team today," stated head coach
Bill Wilson. "Lindsey Wilson was a NAIA College World Series Finalist last season. We will see them again in two weeks, and hopefully there will be a better outcome. Overall, I'm proud of the fight the ladies gave today and happy to see the growth of our team."
Thomas drops to 9-3 on the year while Lindsey Wilson improves to 4-0.
The Lady Night Hawks return to action on Friday, Feb. 27 when they travel to Columbus, Ga., to participate in the NFCA NAIA Leadoff Classic Tournament. Thomas' first game of the tournament will take place at 5 p.m. when they face off with Friends University (Kansas).
