THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University softball team extended their winning streak to four games this afternoon by knocking off Truett-McConnell 7-2 and Coastal Georgia 8-4. These victories sweep the weekend series over both teams.
Â
In game one against Truett-McConnell, the Lady Night Hawks took the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.Â
Alex VanWagner reached base when she was hit by TMC's starter, Harlee Grogan. VanWagner would steal second base before third baseman
Rachel Hoeft crushed her first homerun of the season over the left field fence to give Thomas the 2-0 lead.
Â
In the top of the second, the Bears cut TU's lead to 2-1 when Sara Stites sent a solo shot over the left-center field fence on the first pitch she saw from TU's
Ashley Chapman.
Â
The Lady Night Hawks would respond in the bottom of the third, fourth, and fifth innings to plate five more runs. In the fourth,
Chelsea Carter lifted a two-run homer.Â
Michael Cooper responded as well in the bottom of the fifth when she hit her third homerun of the weekend to extend the Lady Night Hawks' lead to 7-1.
Â
TMC would plate a run in the top of the seventh before being shut down by Chapman for the 7-2 Thomas victory. Chapman picked up the win while Grogan suffered the loss.
Â
In the second game of the day, the Lady Night Hawks jumped out to 7-0 lead over Coastal Georgia and never looked back. In the bottom of the sixth,
Aileen Fiallo would step in as a pinch hitter and launch her first homerun of the 2015 season.
Â
The Mariners attempted a comeback scoring one run in the fifth and three in the seventh, but the Lady Night Hawks shut down CCGA to pick up the 8-4 victory. TU's
Ashley Sikes picked up the win while Coastal Georgia's Dawn Stewart was credited with the loss.
Â
"Day two of our weekend competition was filled with the girls continuing to grow as players and caring teammates," stated head coach
Bill Wilson. "From their belief in each other to their belief in faith, it was a well-rounded effort. I give glory to God for giving them the ability to play this game at this level and trusting in His plan."
Â
Thomas improves to 5-1 on the year while Coastal Georgia drops to 2-5 and Truett-McConnell drops to 2-7.
The Lady Night Hawks return to action on Sunday, Feb. 15 when they host Middle Georgia State College in double header action. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. with game two following thirty minutes after the conclusion of the first contest.
