MOBILE, Ala. – The Thomas University women's basketball team struggled against Mobile (4-0) on the road this afternoon in what was a one-sided affair from the tip. The Lady Night Hawks (2-3) shot 23.6 percent from the field while the Lady Rams almost doubled Thomas' effort shooting 43.7 percent in the 84-60 victory in favor of the hosts.
While the Lady Night Hawks fell in defeat, there was an apparent glimmering hint of growth and building blocks to improve upon. Sophomore
Ashley Webster had a career day for Thomas netting 17 points while bringing down five boards. The Dade City, Fla., native went 6-for-9 from the field, 1-for-1 from behind the arch, and a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
A single-game record, previously held by seniors
Laura Cherranfant and
Bria Joyner-Williams (17), was shattered tonight as fellow senior
Bra'shey Ali brought down 21 rebounds. This individual effort places Ali at the top of NAIA Division II, third among all NAIA Division I and II schools, for a single game rebounding performance.
The opening minutes of the first quarter temporarily belonged to Thomas as they opened with a 4-2 lead. Mobile's first true lead came with 4:49 left in the first when Molly Speed's three from the corner put the Lady Rams ahead 10-5. Both squads traded leads until the 1:53 mark when Mobile closed the quarter on a 7-3 run to grab the 17-13 advantage after one quarter of play.
Mobile went on to outscore Thomas 24-12 in the second to widen their gap to 41-25 heading into the intermission.
Brown's squad narrowed the gap early in the third quarter, but the Lady Rams' early lead was too much for Thomas to overcome down the stretch. Mobile would close the final quarter outscoring Thomas 22-20, picking up the 84-60 victory.
Thomas will be back in action on the road on Tues., Nov. 24 as they travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to face NCAA Division I opponent Jacksonville University in an exhibition. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
