Night Hawks Defeat Barons in OT Thriller

Jason Hendrix | Sports Information Director | @JasonHendrixSID

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University men's basketball team rebounded from its 74-65 loss this past weekend against Coastal Georgia to defeat Brewton-Parker College 68-66 in an overtime thriller.

The Night Hawks jumped out to the 5-2 lead in the first two minutes of the contest with a three-pointer by Javoris Cooks and a lay-in by Jamison Williams.  Thomas continued to build a six point, 8-2 lead through the first media timeout, but the Barons battled back to even the game at 8-8 before taking the 11-8 lead on a deep three by Rodarius Mitchell.

The Barons continued to hold the lead until the 8:44 mark when TU's Adonai Rogers hit the first of many clutch shots to tie the game at 18-18.  Brewton-Parker responded with a 7-0 run capped by a midrange jumper by Deion Bernard to pull ahead 25-18.

Thomas closed out the first half of play on a 13-4 run to take a 33-31 lead into the intermission.

After trading leads multiple times in the first 10 minutes of the second half, Brent Crews' squad built a seven point advantage, 51-44, with 7:09 left in regulation.  The visiting Barons refused to go down without a fight.  BPC powered back to take their first lead, 52-51, in the second half on a dunk by Bernard.

Brewton-Parker stretched their lead to 56-52 in the final minute of the game, looking to steal the contest from the Night Hawks.  With 23 seconds on the clock, Rogers was fouled sending him to the line.  Rogers, once again, stood strong sinking both free-throws to cut the lead to 56-54 in favor of the Barons.  The Barons made the front end of two free-throws, 57-54, giving the Night Hawks one final prayer.

With one second on the clock, Andrea Robinson set a pick at the top of the key allowing Rogers to get free on the left side of the arch.  From the top of the key, Mike Lyons dished the ball over to Rogers who pulled up and drilled the clutch three to send the game into overtime.

On the first play of free basketball, Lyons once again dished out an accurate pass, connecting on an alley-oop jam by Robinson that rocked the gym sending the Night Hawk fans into a frenzy.

The slam was the boost the Night Hawks needed as it fueled Crews' squad as they pulled out the 68-66 victory over the Barons (2-3).

The Hunter Green and White had four players in double figures with Jamison Williams recording his first double-double of the season.

The Night Hawks (3-1) return to action on Saturday, Nov. 14 as they travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to face Edward Waters.  Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
