MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – It took overtime to squeeze out a victory, but the Thomas University men's basketball team completed the season sweep of Florida Memorial University tonight in their 64-57 victory.
Â
Thomas, who narrowly led 31-29 at the break, had a tough time maintaining a consistent lead throughout the game. Each time the squad pushed a four or five point lead, the Lions would scratch back into the contest. Down the stretch, the Lions outscored the Night Hawks 22-20 to send the contest into overtime.Â
Â
The Night Hawks regrouped after regulation and went on to outscore the Lions 13-6 in the extra period leading to the 64-57 victory.Â
Â
TU had three Night Hawks in double figures. Senior
Alan Love led the way for Thomas scoring 19 points and bringing down seven boards. Marcus contributed 15 points, two steals, and four rebounds while
Max Grace added 10 points and three boards in the win.
Â
"[Tonight was a] great road win for the guys," stated head coach
Stephen Cox. "We did not shoot the ball very well nor did we rebound, but we forced a bunch of turnovers and shot a season high 34 free throws. The game was hard on the eyes to watch, but that's this league for you. You take a road win when you can get it. The win column is what's important. One down, on this road trip, and one to go against a very physical St. Thomas team."
Â
Thomas improves to 14-6, 5-5 in TSC play, while Florida Memorial drops to 1-17, 0-9 TSC on the year. The Night Hawks are now tied for sixth in the Sun Conference.
Â
The Night Hawks are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 31 when they return to Miami Gardens, Fla., to face off with Sun Conference rival St. Thomas University. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
