WBB Bounces Back into Win Column Against Northwood

Box Score

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University women's basketball team turned the corner tonight playing what would be their most complete game all season in their 58-42 victory over Sun Conference foe Northwood University.

The game got off to a slow start with both teams scoring a combined 10 points in the first six and half minutes of play.  After giving Northwood the early lead, the Lady Night Hawks powered back on an 11-2 run to take a commanding 20-11 lead over the Seahawks. Over the next four minutes, the Seahawks used a 5-2 run trimming the margin to 22-16.  The Hunter Green and White, once again, pressed on defense forcing costly turnovers and converted on the offensive end of the floor to end the opening frame with a 10-3 run, entering the break with the 32-19 lead.

Northwood fought back midway through the second half with a 10-2 run capped off by a mid-range jumper by Lakeisha Blanson to cut the deficit to six, 39-31, with 9:53 remaining on the clock.  This was the Seahawks' final push for a comeback as the Lady Night Hawks overcame their late surge to bring home the 58-42 victory.

Junior center Bria Joyner-Williams had a career evening collecting her first double-double of the season.  The 5-foot-11 Fayetteville, Ga., native racked up 10 points while bring down 12 boards.  Joyner-Williams also added three steals and an assist in the victory.  Senior forward Ivory Smith scored a game high of 13 points, narrowly missing her first double-double of the season by one rebound.  Courtney Saunds contributed eight points and seven rebounds in her 32 minutes.

"I'm so proud of the way my girls responded tonight," exclaimed head coach Coretta Brown.  "This team has been faced with a lot of adversity so far this season. Through it all, they continue to work hard and keep a positive attitude. I'm glad we got the win tonight, but really impressed with the growth of these young women on and off the court."

Thomas improves to 6-10, 3-4 in TSC play, while Northwood drops to 4-12, 3-4 on the year.

The Lady Night Hawks return to action on Saturday, Jan. 24 when they host Sun Conference rival Ave Maria University (Fla.) at the TU Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
