Thomas Softball (1-5) picked up their first victory of the season, after splitting two games yesterday in day two of the 2014 SSU Tournament in Savannah, Ga.
The Lady Night Hawks were cruising in the early game leading Morgan State University (1-2) 5-0 after four innings. The MSU bats caught fire in the fifth, knocking around three TU pitchers for nine runs on nine hits to take a 9-5 lead. Morgan State added three more in the next frame and seemed to be pulling away towards an easy 12-5 win over the Lady Night Hawks. TU, however, rose to the challenge when they loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth on two walks and a single. TU didn't stop there as they capitalized on two runs with consecutive bases loaded walks in the bottom of the same inning (6
th). Senior pitcher
Summer Rose (2-5, RBI) drove in another run on a base hit and freshman right fielder
Brittany Daniels (0-4, R, RBI) would plate another on a fielder's choice. TU would go on to drive in two more runs and make it a one run game. Down by one in the bottom of the seventh, Thomas tied the game at twelve to send it into extra innings when senior third baseman
Aimee Johnson (2-3, R, 4 RBI) reached first on a fielder's choice and took second as the MSU Bears left the base unoccupied. Running for Johnson, sophomore
Kallie Shirling scored the tying run on freshmen
Ashley Sikes' (1-1, R, 2 RBI, BB) hit thru the hole at shortstop. TU would allow two runs in the top of the eighth after going to the international tie breaker, starting with a runner on second base. MSU blanked the Lady Night Hawks bats in the bottom of the inning to seal the 14-12 win. Rose took the loss, falling to 0-3.
In the night cap TU beat Brewton Parker 8-7, snapping their five game season opening losing skid. TU jumped on BPC in the top of the first inning with 3 runs. Junior left fielder
Chandler Seay (2-3, 2 R) led off the inning with a walk, a fielder's choice and a base hit moved her to third, and came in to score the game's first run on a single by junior first baseman
Carmen Nadal (2-4, R, 2 RBI). A base hit by Rose (1-4, 1 R, 3 RBI) would drive in Johnson, who had reached on a base hit. Junior center fielder
Aileen Fiallo (2-4, 2 RBI) tacked on another single to score senior
Rachel Ivancic, pinch running for Nadal, rounding out the three run first inning. The Lady Night Hawks scored 2 more in the 3
rd to open up a 5-0 advantage but BPC fought back, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third. Thomas scored 2 more in the 5
th and in the bottom of the 5
th BPC tied the game at seven with some help from the Lady Night Hawks defense. TU answered back in the 6
th when Seay scored on a Brewton Parker error after singling earlier in the inning. Freshman right fielder
Brittany Daniels also went 2-4 with 2 RBI's. Rose (1-3) tossed 2 2/3 innings out of the pen for the win.
TU will next face Point University at 11 a.m. on Friday February 14 at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. Later in the day, Thomas will face Reinhardt University (1:15 p.m.) and University of Mobile (5:45 p.m.).
