Lady Night Hawks Dominate in Sun Conference Opener

Box Score
THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University women's basketball team opened their Sun Conference schedule with a dominating victory over rival Florida Memorial University.  The Lady Night Hawks increased their winning streak to two by defeating the Lady Lions 71-56.

From the tip, the Night Hawks controlled the up-paced tempo converting several early three pointers for a 12-6 lead.  The Lady Lions tried to slow the TU's high tempo pace by applying a full-court press.  At first, the plan seemed to work leading to the Lady Lions taking its only lead, 15-14, of the game with 10:37 remaining in the first half.  However, the Lady Night Hawks regrouped and started to play a team-oriented approach.  After exchanging basket-for-basket down the stretch, the Hunter Green and White extended its lead to six to head into the half up 32-26.

In second half action, the Lady Night Hawks continued their offensive onslaught to the tone of a 17 point lead with 5:07 remaining in the contest.  Florida Memorial pressed once again as they did in the first half of play, but the Lady Night Hawks avoided the pressure to claim the 71-56 victory.

The squad had its second highest amount of assists (17) this season while bringing down a season high 56 rebounds, 17 which were offensive.

Head women's coach Coretta Brown commented, "Today was another solid team performance. We had four in double figures and 17 assists. We will continue to work hard and get better in practice. They are really buying in to winning the day, and it's paying off."

Senior guard Jessica Anderson had a breakout game narrowly missing a double-double.  The 5'8" Jonesboro, Ga., native played a complete game scoring 13 points, rebounding nine boards, collecting seven assists, and wreaking havoc on defense with five steals. Courtney Saunds had a game high of 15 points while freshman Tess Wright contributed 12 points, three rebounds, four assists, and one steal.  Laura Cherranfant was the fourth Lady Night Hawk in double digits on the afternoon scoring 12.

Notably, senior forward Ivory Smith set a single-game, career high in rebounds collecting 13.

Thomas University improves to 6-3, 1-0 in TSC play, sending FMU to 2-6, 0-1 in TSC play, on the year.

The Lady Night Hawks return to the court on Saturday, Dec. 13 when they travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to face NCAA Division I foe University of North Florida.  Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
