Cherranfant's Double-Double Leads WBB to 76-73 Victory

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – On the heels of a career night and dominate performance by junior Laura Cherranfant, the Thomas University women's basketball team pulled out the 76-73 victory over College of Coastal Georgia to extend their winning streak to three.
 
The Lady Night Hawks played an overpowering first half that led to a 37-29 lead heading into intermission.  While the Lady Night Hawks led by as much as 19 points after intermission, the Mariners did not bow out too soon.
 
With inside of three minutes remaining in the contest, the Lady Night Hawks held on to a 72-59 lead over Coastal Georgia. Behind a game high seven blocks by Shaikiera Armstrong and lights out shooting by Kierstan Green, the Mariners went on a 10-0 run to pull within three with just over a minute remaining in the contest.  Armstrong recorded a double-double in her season debut for the Mariners scoring 14 points and bringing down 13 rebounds.
 
With a 72-69 lead heading into the final minute, the Lady Night Hawks milked the clock on each possession forcing the Mariners to foul to stop the clock.  Senior Courtney Saunds iced the game with a late field goal and by converting both free throws down the stretch to lead to the 76-73 victory.
 
In route to her second double-double on the season, Cherranfant dominated both ends of the floor.  On offense, the Lauderhill, Fla., native scored 18 points shooting 7-for-17 from the field and 4-for-9 from the charity stripe. Cherranfant crashed the boards with 17 rebounds, nine offensive and eight defensive.  The 6-foot-2 center also blocked three shots and record an assist and steal.
 
Saunds also had an all-around night on the court.  She led the way in scoring for the Lady Night Hawks with 22 points while bringing down six boards, collecting two steals, dishing out three assists, and blocking three shots.  While she scored eight points in the contest, sophomore guard Briyanna Brantley also recorded two career highs during tonight's matchup, six rebounds and five assists. 
 
"We're making progress in the areas we need to," stated head coach Coretta Brown.  "Everyone was engaged tonight, and it's a good win for us leading into the break."
 
Thomas splits the season series improving to 7-3, 1-0 in TSC play, while Coastal Georgia drops to 5-7 on the year.
 
The Lady Night Hawks return to the court on Thursday, Jan. 1 when they to Jacksonville, Fla., to face NCAA Division I foe Jacksonville University. The New Year's Day matchup is set to tipoff at 2:00 p.m.  To view this game live, click here.
