The Webber International University Lady Warriors (8-7, 5-2) outlasted the TU Lady Night Hawks (7-12, 3-5), 75-70, in an exciting Sun Conference battle on Saturday afternoon at the TU Gymnasium.
Webber opened up an 8-0 lead to open the game holding the Lady Night Hawks scoreless for the opening three minutes. TU finally got on the board with two free throws at the 16:38 mark but WIU remained hot from three point range knocking down their fourth three of the early going for a 14-2 advantage with 15:50 to go in the half. A 5-2 run for Thomas made it a 7 point game with ten to play. The Warriors responded with a run of their own to open up a ten point lead with six minutes to play. TU responded again with a 5-0 run to make it a 24-19 game but Webber came right back with four of their own. Webber took a 32-27 advantage into the locker room in a half that featured sloppy play from besides, with the teams combining for 33 turnovers of which the Lady Night Hawks had 20.
TU opened the second with three unanswered points to close the gap to two but a failed free throw and a turnover led to Webber's first points of the half, keeping the Warriors ahead by three. Freshman guard
Jessica Anderson hit a three with 18:02 to play, tying the game for the first time since the opening tip-off. Junior forward Taylor Brit gave Thomas their first lead of the game at the 15:40 mark and freshman guard
Shamari Josey hit a three seconds later to open a five point lead. After Webber responded, Anderson struck again from behind the arc to give TU a 41-35 lead. A 13-2 run by WIU put them ahead 48-43 with eleven minutes to go in the half. The teams exchanged baskets and turnovers over the next three minutes until Anderson struck again from three point land to get Thomas within four at 53-49. Webber made it a nine point game when they converted on a rebound after two missed free throws, taking a 61-52 lead with 5:44 to play. A 9-4 run by TU was capped with a basket by freshman guard
Joi Wright, converting her free throw after being fouled to make it a 65-61 game with 1:27 to play. Webber outscored TU 10-9 down the stretch to close out the five point victory.
Thomas will hit the road this coming weekend, traveling to Miami Gardens, FL to face Florida Memorial University on Thursday January 31
st at 6PM.
