Night Hawks hold off Skyhawks

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Night Hawks faced off against Point University Skyhawks in a key SSAC East matchup on Saturday afternoon in the TU Gym.

Thomas jumped out to a 10-point lead early sparked by a layup from Joshua Robertson, the scoring slowed a bit as the half went on, but the Night Hawks continued to maintain the lead as both teams went into the locker room.

The second half started out with much of the same as Chris Dorbor opened up the scoring with a layup, then Deonta Jones found Robertson on back-to-back layups to bring the lead up to 18 for the Night Hawks. Point began to get hot from the perimeter as they scored three three-pointers in a row to cut the lead to nine. Andre Lightbourne knocked down a three to bring the lead back to double-digits, then Dorbor fought through the contact for a layup and a Robertson free throw lifted the lead to 13. Thomas continued to pour on the offense with a Noah Lattin jumper and an Armani Thomas three extended the lead with 13:35 to go. The Skyhawks climbed back into the game, cutting the lead down to eight with 5:14 left in the contest. Another three from Point brought the margin to five, on the ensuing possession, a layup brought the Skyhawks to a one-possession game with 3:34 left. The Night Hawks found a shot in the arm thanks to Robertson who found Lattin on a cut down low and he attacked the rim with an emphatic dunk to extend the lead to six, then Thomas knocked down a jumper to pad the lead, but after a couple of free throws and an and-one it was back to a three point game, after a one made shot from the free throw for the Night Hawks, the Skyhawks nailed a three to be down only one with 1:39 to go. After a timeout, Robertson found Lattin again for another dunk to bring the lead back to three, following a miss from the Skyhawks, Robertson took the ball all the way to the rim for an and-one opportunity which he converted. Another missed three from Point and a quick foul sent Lightbourne to line with 16 seconds to go, and Lightbourne made both to ice the game for the Night Hawks.

Robertson led Thomas in scoring with 15 points, as well as four boards and five assists. Thomas finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals and a block. Lattin ended the game with 10 points, four rebounds and a steal.

The game was the last home game before a five game road trip, which begins next week with a matchup against Blue Mountain Christian University on Thursday, January 30th at 8:30 PM.
