Night Hawks Are Ram Tough

Thomas defeats #11 Mobile in hoops

Thomasville, GA | The Thomas University men's basketball team (9-10, 7-5) pulled off a major upset in the Rose City by knocking off #11 University of Mobile, 77-75, before a packed crowd in The Nest (TU Gymnasium). The victory is the first victory over a ranked opponent, in basketball, in the modern era of TU Athletics.

The Night Hawks would enter the contest in search of redemption, following a loss to the Rams in their previous match-up on November, 16th. In the first three minutes of play, the Night Hawks would lead 4-0. This advantage would be short lived though, as the Rams would then produce a 13-0 run to lead the Night Hawks 13-4 with 14 minutes remaining in the first half. With each following possession, the Night Hawks would slowly cut into this lead. Jailin Lee would connect on a tough jumper and deep three pointer on consecutive possessions, then Tyson Anderson would drain a three pointer of his own to cut the deficit to five, 17-12, with 12 minutes remaining in the half. From there, the Rams would go on a 13-0 run to further their lead. Joshua Robertson would display toughness for the remainder of the first half to provide the Night Hawks with a sign of life. However, the Night Hawks would trail the Rams, 31-43, heading into the break.

On the Night Hawks first possession of the second half, Tyson Anderson would connect on a tough fade-away that would kick-start a 11-0 Thomas run. This run would cut the deficit to one, 42-41, with 16 minutes remaining in the final half of play. Less than a minute later, the Night Hawks would take their first lead of the second half courtesy of a Devin Baney layup. The Rams would fight to regain control of the contest, and would take the lead, 65-64 , with just under five minutes remaining in regulation. However, on the following possession, Jailin Lee would respond with a three-point play to regain Thomas' lead, 67-65. From there, Joshua Robertson would continue to display an energetic style of play to provide the Night Hawks with the offensive production they needed. Robertson would produce five crucial points in the last minute of play. Despite Robertson's effort, the Rams would take a one-point lead with 30 seconds remaining in the contest. In the Night Hawks last possession, with five seconds remaining in regulation, Andre Lightbourne would drain a deep three pointer to seal a hard-fought victory, 77-75.

In a game that saw two ties and six lead changes, four Night Hawks would see double-digit scoring. Joshua Robertson would have a breakout performance and produce a career-high 18 points, to lead all Night Hawks, while adding four rebounds and two steals. Jailin Lee and Andre Lightbourne would follow closely behind with 16 points a piece. Tyson Anderson would supply the Night Hawks with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Deonta Jones would lead the Night Hawks in assists (3) and rebounds (7)

NEXT UP: The Night Hawks will be back in action on January, 27th to take on William Carey University in a crucial SSAC match-up. Tip-off is set for 2 PM in the TU Gymnasium.
