Night Hawk Historic Basketball Season Comes to an End

Night Hawks "Battle for the Red Banner" Falls Short

The historic Men's Basketball season for the Thomas Night Hawks has come to an end with a 107-104 loss in overtime to the LSU-Shreveport Pilots during the first round of the NAIA Basketball Tournament in Alexandria, LA.  The Night Hawks were led by Jordan Booker, who was only two assists short of a triple-double, with a 27 point, 10 rebound, and eight assist performance.  Thomas had three additional Night Hawks score in double figures, with Jarvis Brown adding 19 points and three assists, Andre Lightbourne with 16 points, and Shakari Williams with 13 points and five rebounds.  Thomas shot an incredible 91.7% from the free throw line, connecting on 22 of 24 attempts.  The Thomas bench, led by Brown's 19 points and Lightbourne's 16 points, scored 49 points in the game, compared to 17 bench points by the Pilots.

The Pilots were led by Damon Davis, with 37 points, Jalen Brooks, with 10 points and 12 rebounds.  Other double-figure scores for LSU-Shreveport were Tyler Washington with 25 points and eight rebounds along with Calvin Carpenter with 18 points and five assists.

LSU-Shreveport more than doubled Thomas' attempts from the free throw line, shooting 54 shots and connecting on 38 of them (70.4%).  The game featured seven ties and six lead changes throughout the contest.  The Night Hawk largest lead of the day occurred in the first-half, when they led by 13 with 4:25 remaining. Thomas ultimately took a 10-point lead into the locker room, 49-39.  Thomas and LSU-Shreveport traded buckets to open the second half, but then the Pilots went on a 22 to 2 run over the next 7:43 to open their largest lead of the night at 10 points.  Although, Thomas would go on the tie the game two times after the huge run, including at the end of regulation at 87 points each, the Night Hawks would never lead the game again.

The game was sent into overtime when Thomas went the length of the court, with only six seconds remaining in the ball game, would hit a three-pointer by Toriano Lewis off of a Jordan Booker assist.  The offense continued for both teams in the five-minute overtime with the Pilots scoring 20 points, but Thomas only scoring 17 points.  For the game, LSU-Shreveport outscored Thomas in the paint, 54-36.

For Thomas, the game marks the end of a season in which they tied the program's most victories in a single season with 18 (2014-15), spent the most weeks receiving votes in the NAIA National Rankings (seven), had their best regular season finish in the Sun Conference (tied second), had a ten game winning streak, and had the Sun Conference Coach of the Year in Colin Cotter.  The Night Hawks finish the season 18-9, the best winning percentage in program history (.667).
