MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A last-second 3-point attempt by Javoris Cooks was no good and Thomas University (16-12) lost, 64-62, to No. 23 Keiser University (20-9) in the semifinals of the Sun Conference Men's Basketball Tournament held at the Fernandez Family Center on the St. Thomas University campus.
A 3-pointer by Cooks with 1:54 left in the game gave TU the 60-57 edge, but Keiser answered with a trey of its own to tie the game with 1:38 remaining. Both teams immediately began fouling and TU's
Katrell Myers was 2-of-2 while Keiser made 4-of-6 at the line over the next 1:37. Down by two, Cooks' 3-point attempt from the corner with one second remaining was no good.
Myers, a second team all-conference selection, posted his second double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, along with two assists and a steal. Myers was a perfect 14-of-14 from the stripe. Cooks, a first team all-conference selection, recorded 13 points, hitting a trio of 3-pointers, three assists and two steals. Reserve
Ivan Tomic tallied nine points and seven rebounds for the Night Hawks.
Johnnel Ginnie's jumper opened the scoring for the game. Keiser led, 26-19, with 6:04 remaining in the first, but a 14-6 run at the end of the period gave Thomas the 33-32 lead heading into the half.
Keiser made a 10-0 run over the first five minutes of the second stanza and held the lead until a jumper from Tomic with 3:27 remaining tied the game at 57 apiece.
