THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University men's basketball team scored with five seconds remaining to defeat Point University (Ga.), 80-78, Friday night at the TU Gymnasium, in the season opener.
Junior
Joshua Scott led the way for the Night Hawks, scoring 25 points off of 10-of-22 shooting. He also had eight rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Redshirt freshman
Marcus Louis pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds for TU.
After Point scored the first five points of the game, Thomas junior
Kadeem Webb hit a 3-pointer with 17:11 left in the first half and TU held the lead until a layup by Point with 7:38 left in the game. The Night Hawks led, 51-32, at the half.
Point led 70-64 with 6:09 left in the second half, then four straight points from junior
Ivan Tomic but the lead to two with 4:53 remaining. Point again extended the lead to four at 3:49, but a bucket from
Quante Smith and a three by Scott tied the game at 75 with three minutes left.
The Skyhawks hit a pair of free throws, but Thomas took the 78-77 lead after a 3-pointer from sophomore
Brandon Kostyk. With one minute left, Point hit one of two free throws to tie the game. Kostyk missed a 3-point attempt, then Point turned the ball over to give Thomas one last attempt.
After a timeout with 25 seconds remaining, Scott hit a two with five seconds left to win the game, 80-78.
The Night Hawks next play three straight games on the road: Oct. 29 at Talladega College; No. 1 at Savannah State University; Nov. 5 at Brewton-Parker College.
