Fallin's Barbeque Men's Basketball Postgame Report - Johnson & Wales

THOMASVILLE, Ga. - Johnson & Wales (Fla.) upset Thomas, 74-68, on Thursday evening in Sun Conference (TSC) action inside TU Gymnasium, ending a three-game losing streak. The Night Hawks suffered just their second loss in seven home games.

"We were able to find holes in their zone in the first half, and our guys made plays with confidence," Night Hawks coach Brent Crews said. "It obviously got tougher in the second half, but most games in conference are going to go down to the end.

"Our students really got into the game, and that resonated with our team. We feed off their energy and appreciate the support."

Isa Brandon tallied a double-double for the Wildcats with 34 points, including 20 after halftime, and 10 rebounds. Brandon was 10-of-15 shooting, including 5-of-7 from deep, and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe to go along with six blocks. Nick Preradovic added 13 points.

Katrell Myers finished with 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting and a perfect 6-of-6 effort from the free throw line for Thomas (9-9, 4-6 TSC). Jalen Bonds had 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Myers and Bonds combined for 29 of their team's 43 bench points.

Johnnel Ginnie and Willie Holloway each added eight points for the Green and White. JaVoris Cooks tallied eight boards and seven of his squad's 14 assists. Ginnie and Demetrius Rivers each blocked two shots.

Johnson & Wales (5-15, 3-7 TSC) shot 42.9 percent (21-of-49) from the floor but 52.4 percent (11-of-21) in the final 20 minutes. The Wildcats were 48.3 percent (14-of-29) from 3 overall but 66.7 percent (8-of-12) after intermission.

The Night Hawks finished 37.5 percent (24-of-64) from the floor, including 46.9 percent (15-of-32) in the first 20 minutes to stake to a 10-point edge, 37-27, with 37 seconds remaining before halftime following two Rivers free throws.

Each team finished 18-of-24 from the line. The Wildcats were 12-of-13 after the break, while the Night Hawks shot 11-of-12 in the same period.

Crews' squad outscored the Wildcats in the paint, 38-8, and turned 20 Wildcat turnovers into 21 points. The Night Hawks outrebounded the visitors 37-36, including 12-6 on the offensive glass, leading to 10 second chance points.

Thomas led for the bulk of the first half, which included three dunks - two by Bonds and one from Ginnie - and maintained a 38-32 upper hand at recess.

The Green and White built a seven-point lead 4:06 into the second half courtesy of a Myers layup, but the Wildcats countered with a 9-0 run and grabbed a 46-44 edge after two Isa free throws. Two ties and three lead changes ensued before the Night Hawks broke a tie at 49 with a 7-0 spurt, finished off with a Rivers layup with 8:30 to play.

Consecutive treys by Isa regained the upper hand for his team, 61-60, less than two minutes later, and the Wildcats stretched the margin to five after two Isa free throws at the 2:30 mark.

A D.J. Roulhac layup on the next trip down the court was followed by a Roulhac steal on the inbounds pass and layup to cut the margin to 67-66 with 2:04 to go, but after each team traded a basket on its next possession, Preradovic hit a 3-pointer from the corner to give his team a two-possession lead at the 1:10 mark. The Night Hawks missed four attempts from deep down the stretch, and Preradovic converted two free throws with 11.2 seconds left for the final margin.

Thomas hosts No. 25 Keiser (Fla.) on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.
