Last Second Free Throw Pushes Warner Past TU in Semi-Finals

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – No. 10 Warner University (Fla.) converted a free throw with .9 second left in the game as they topped the Thomas University men's basketball team, 84-83, in The Sun Conference Semi-Finals on Monday. Katrell Myers tied the game at 83-83 with 30 seconds left in the game before the winning free throw.

TU ended the year with a 14-10 record, while the Royals improved to 25-4 on the season. The Night Hawks await entry into the NAIA National Championship with an at-large bid.

Javoris Cooks led TU with 28 points, while Willie Holloway led the team with nine rebounds. TJ Rines provided 16 points, while Tre' Ford added 13 and led the Night Hawks with five assists.

Ford knocked down two three-pointers that gave TU a 14-8 lead early in the game. Warner went on a 9-0 run and took a 22-19 lead before Rines knocked down a three and tied the game at 22-22. Waren Hall made a jumper that put WU ahead 39-32 with 20 second left in the first half. Cooks converted three free throws that cut the Royals lead to 39-35 at halftime.

Warner opened the second half on a 12-5 run and pushed the lead out to 51-40. The Night Hawks responded with a 15-2 run as Cooks gave TU a 58-57 lead on an and one. The Royals then went on a 12-0 run and took back the lead at 69-58 with less than 10 minutes to play.

TU answered back with an 11-2 run and cut the deficit to 71-69.  Ford made 1-of-2 free throws that kept the game at a possession at 75-72 with four and a half to play. TU went on a 9-2 spirt including a three from Cooks that put the Night Hawks ahead, 81-79, with a minute and a half left. Myers tied the game at 83-83 with 26 seconds remaining in the ball game. Josh Ellis made 1-of-2 free throws with .9 seconds remaining. Cooks had the last shot of the game that was off the mark as the Night Hawks fell short.

TU shot 50.9 percent (28-of-55) from the floor, including 50 percent (13-of-26) from deep, and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the free throw line.
