Barry defeats Thomas in exhibition

Box Score

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -  Thomas lost at Barry (Fla.), ranked No. 12 in the latest NCAA Division II NABC Coaches' Top 25, 106-60 on Tuesday evening inside the Health and Sports Center in the Night Hawks' second of three exhibitions.

Each team shot 50 percent in the first half, but the Night Hawks limited the Buccaneers, playing the third game of their regular season, to just 4-of-12 from deep and two made free throws in the period while shooting perfect (12-of-12) from the line.

Thomas' Johnnel Ginnie tallied 13 of his team-high 14 points in the first 20 minutes. JaVoris Cooks had nine of his 13 points in the period as well.

Ginnie scored seven of his team's first 11 points, as a Ginnie trey opened up an 11-5 advantage for the Green and White less than four minutes into the game.

Barry (3-0) countered with a 9-0 run, with the last five points coming from Marko Tomic, to take a 14-11 lead at the 14:03 mark. A Ginne dunk brought the Night Hawks within 14-13 less than a minute later, but Barry responded with a 10-0 spurt to make the score 24-13 midway through the frame. Down 33-20, Thomas closed within two points, 38-36, at the 1:54 mark following a Ginnie jumper and trailed by just just three, 42-39, at the break after an Eric Johnson 3 with 1:22 on the clock.

However, the Buccaneers, already leading 51-48 with 16:35 left in the game, put together a 27-0 run over the course of 6:40 to seize control. Barry outscored Thomas 64-21 in the second half and shot 63 percent from the field.

"We played solid in the first half and shot very well from the free throw line," Thomas coach Brent Crews said. "However, in the second half, Barry just played lights out for a significant stretch, and they're capable of that. Barry is a tremendous team. They showed that starting at the beginning of the year winning at Auburn."

Four Buccaneers scored in double figures, led by Tomic's 20 points on 8-of-8 shooting and seven rebounds. Sunday Dech had 19 points on a 7-of-13 clip from the floor. Johannes Dolven had 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting and eight rebounds off the bench, while Kyle Carey recorded 14 points, going 4-of-6 from the floor and 3-of-4 from deep, in a reserve role.

Willie Holloway and Ivan Tomic each had eight points for Thomas, while Johnson scored seven. Cooks, Holloway and Tomic each pulled down five boards.

Barry shot 56.3 percent (40-of-71) from the field overall, 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from deep and 70 percent (14-of-20) from the line.

Thomas finished 19-of-23 from the line. Cooks finished a perfect 7-of-7, while Ginnie was 5-of-6.

The Night Hawks travel to Life (Ga.), ranked No. 9 in the 2017–18 NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Coaches' Preseason Top 25, on Sunday, Nov. 26, for a rematch of a Nov. 1 83-74 Thomas win inside TU Gymnasium. Tip-off on Sunday is set for 3 p.m. ET.
