Night Hawks Fall Short Against Johnson and Wales

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University men's basketball team was edged by Johnson and Wales (Fla.), 58-56, Saturday at the TU Gymnasium. TU had the last possession of the game but were unable to come away with a basket.

The Night Hawks went to 9-5, 4-4 in The Sun Conference, while the Wildcats went to 8-10, 3-5 in The Sun Conference. TU travels to Ave Maria 4 p.m. Saturday in Ave Maria, Fla.

Tre' Ford and Jalen Bonds both led the Night Hawks with 11 points, while Javoris Cooks added 10. Bonds pulled in a team-best eight rebounds, while Katrell Myers hauled in seven.

TJ Rines opened game with a made three pointer for the Night Hawks, their only lead of the game. The Wildcats went on a 17-2 run and opened a 17-5 lead early in the game. TU responded with an 8-0 run and cut the lead to 17-13. Bonds converted a jumper with under a minute left in the first half that slimmed the JWU lead to 32-27. The Wildcats held a 38-28 lead at the break.

The Night Hawks went on a 13-3 run late in the second half and pulled within a possession at 55-54. Gino Fils-Alme knocked down a three-pointer for JWU that pushed the lead back to 58-54. Cooks came converted two free throws to again pull TU within a possession at 58-56.

TU made three defensive stops and had the ball with 17 seconds remaining. Cooks missed a jumper before the rebound went off the hands of JWU and out of bounds, giving TU the ball with three seconds remaining. Myers' runner came up short as the buzzer sounded giving the Wildcats collected the victory.
