Box Score LAKE WALES, Ga. – The #10 ranked Warner University Royals (22-6, 13-3) held of the visiting Thomas University men's basketball team (12-17, 6-10), 79-78, on Saturday afternoon, in the regular season and Sun Conference finale for both teams.
A game that had little significance other than pride, with both teams having secured their spots in the TSC Tourney, definitely ended up showing that neither team was ready to concede the game. After losing, at home, by 19 points to Warner, back in January. Thomas was looking to make amends.
After Warner held the early lead, TU tied the game and eventually took a six point advantage with 11 minutes to play in the first. Thomas allowed their lead to slip away and, with 8:24 to go, the teams found themselves knotted at 17. The back and forth would continue the rest of the half and Warner would take a slim 29-28 advantage into the locker room.
The second half saw the Royals slowly take control of the game, eventually building a 14 point advantage, with 14:30 to go, that seemed to be enough to coast the rest of the way. Thomas, thinking back to January, was not willing to let this game go the same way. TU chipped away and would make it a one point game, 57-56, on a mid-range jumper by junior
Jamison Williams with 7:19 to play. Warner bent but did not break and the Night Hawks were unable to get a defensive stop when needed, as the Royals secured the victory.
After winning three in a row, the Night Hawks are now in the midst of a three game skid. Junior
Adonai Rogers led TU with 24 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Junior
Mike Lyons contributed 17 while Williams scored 12. TU went 19 of 31 went from the charity stripe.
TU must now put the regular season behind them and set their sight towards the TSC Tournament Quarter Final Round. Thomas will enter the tourney as the #5 seed and will travel to North Miami, Fla., to face #4 Johnson & Wales University, on Thursday February 25
th at a time that is yet to be announced. This will be TU's third straight tournament appearance, they are seeking their second appearance in the TSC Tournament Final Four.
