Box Score Thomasville, Ga. - The TU Men's Basketball team, was doomed by a second half let down, allowing an 18 point half time lead to slip away, in a shocking 83-80 loss at the hands of the visiting Webber International Warriors in a pivotal Sun Conference match-up.
Thomas and Webber battled to establish supremacy in the early going. TU would hold a slim 13-12 lead with Webber using the three ball for all of their points. A 12-6 Night Hawk run would make it a 25-18 game and sophomore
Javoris Cooks would give TU a ten point lead with a three ball at the 10:50 mark of the first half. Thomas would jump out to a 43-30 lead, with four minutes to play, on the strength of a 15-5 run. The teams would battle down the stretch but the Night Hawks would close out the half with a commanding 55-37 lead.
Webber jumped on the Night Hawks in the early going of the second half with a 14-3 run. Junior
Adonai Rogers would stall the run with a three pointer at the 15:30 mark. WIU responded with a two and multiple TU turnovers sent WIU on a 7-0 run, closing the margin to six with 13:40 to play. Sophomore
Javoris Cooks ended the Webber run with a drive in the lane for a lay-up, opening the game to an eight point margin with 12 left on the clock. An alley-oop with under ten minutes left in the game, gave TU a 67-59 lead. Webber would use a 13-4 run over the next 4:35, to jump ahead and take a 73-72. Two free throws by Cooks gave TU a one point margin but WIU responded to re-take the lead at 75-74. Seconds later, Cooks would step to the line with an opportunity to give TU the lead but would only connect on one of two. Cooks redeemed himself by creating a turnover, on a steal, during the next WIU possession, then driving to the basket for a lay-up and a 77-75 lead. Webber responded with a 9-3 run over the final minutes of play for an 83-80 lead with eight seconds to play. As the clock struck zero, an attempt by Cooks, from behind the ark, would rattle of the rim and dash any hope for the Night Hawks.
TU will wrap up their regular season TSC play on Saturday, when they travel to Lake Wales, Fla.to face Warner University, looking to clinch their spot in the TSC Tourney. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
