Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Thomas Scratched by the Royals

Jason Hendrix | Sports Information Director | @JasonHendrixSID

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University men's basketball team was looking for an upset victory over No. 11 Warner University tonight at the TU Gymnasium, but their early eight-point advantage and offensive fury in the first 10 minutes of the contest were not enough to pull out the win as they fell to the Royals 84-65.

Thomas came out firing on all cylinders in the first 10 minutes of the half and built a convincing eight point, 22-14 lead over the Royals.  The Night Hawks looked to slowly pull away from Warner but an 8-0 run over the next four and half minutes by the Royals would tie the game at 22-22.

Warner took its first lead since the opening basket with 2:06 left in the first half when John Barrett swished a deep three from four feet behind the arch.  The Royals would push their advantage to six, 30-24, but Thomas closed the gap in the final minute to head into the half narrowly trailing 31-30.

The Royals caught fire in the first four minutes of the second frame to go up 43-33 on Thomas.  Their 12-3 run to begin the half stalled Thomas' momentum that was gained in the first frame.

Warner would continue to widen the game to 18 points, 55-37, with 13:29 remaining and shut the door on any possibly for a Thomas comeback when they stretched the gap to 72-49 with just under five minutes left in the contest.

Down the stretch, Thomas outscored the Royals 16-12, but the early lead was too much to overcome.  The 11th-ranked Royals improved 15-5, 6-2 TSC, with their 84-65 victory over Thomas.

The Night Hawks (8-13, 2-6 TSC) return to action on Thursday, Jan. 28 when they travel to Miami Gardens, Fla., to face Florida Memorial University in Sun Conference action. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the Broward College gymnasium.
