DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Night Hawks' losing streak has now reached six games as the Thomas University men's basketball team fell this afternoon 56-54 to the Javelinas of Texas A&M-Kingsville in their final game of the Daytona Mitsubishi/Kia Shootout hosted by Embry-Riddle.
Thomas (5-8, 0-1 TSC) got off to a struggling start as the Javelinas netted the first 11 points of the contest. The skid stopped when freshman
Jalen Bonds netted a jumper from just inside the arch with 15:51 left in the opening half. Over the next 12 minutes of the first half, the Javelinas would outscore Thomas 16-11 to reach a first half height 14 point, 27-13 lead.
After TAMUK's Thomas Diaz netted the Javelinas' 27th point of the contest, the Night Hawks would close the half on a 10-2 run to cut into Kingsville's 29-23 lead at the intermission.
The Javelinas scored the opening basket of the second half and continued to build their lead to 37-29 with 12:04 left in regulation. The Night Hawks battled back connecting on four consecutive baskets that eventually powered Thomas to its first lead of the contest at 51-49 when
Javoris Cooks sunk a three from the top of the key with 1:06 left on the clock.
TAMUK regained the lead with 42 ticks left when DJ Weathers swished a three for the 52-51 advantage. After two successful free-throw conversations by Cris Boleware put the Javelinas up 54-51 with 14 seconds left, junior guard
Adonai Rogers hit the tying three from the right side of the arch with nine seconds left in regulation. TAMUK called a timeout immediately after the make to set up a final attempt for the game winner.
With 1.6 seconds left on the clock, Boleware came up big again for the Javelinas sinking a coast-to-coast pull up jumper for the 56-54 victory for TAMUK.
Cooks led Thomas with 11 points as the only Night Hawk in double figures. Texas A&M-Kingsville's Weathers led all scorers with 16 points in 34 minutes of play.
