Box Score THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Thomas University men's basketball team continued their unbeaten streak tonight at home defeating St. Thomas University 66-58 in their Sun Conference opener.
The match up started off with several turnovers, missed shots, and ball-handling errors. The first two points of the game were scored almost three minutes into the contest. Slowly, the pace picked up, and the Night Hawks jumped out to the early lead that at its height reached 11 points. St. Thomas clawed its way back into the game going on a 29-18 run to tie the game at 36-36 heading into the half.
Second half action was an offensive push by the Night Hawks that pushed the Bobcats back on their heels. Defensively, the Night Hawks forced multiple Bobcat turnovers that led to St. Thomas' ultimate demise.
TU outscored the Bobcats 13-3 in the final minutes of the game. The Night Hawks had four players in double digits. Leading the way was senior guard
Rodney Sturkie who netted 14 points while racking up three steals, two assists, and two rebounds. Senior forward
Alan Love contributed 12 points and six rebounds while classmate
Max Grace dropped 10 points with three rebounds and a steal.
"I'm happy for our program with its win tonight over a Top-25 program," exclaimed head coach
Stephen Cox. "That was an old-fashion backyard grudge match. St. Thomas is such a strong and physical team. Our guys handled the pressure and rebounded well down the stretch. This is the best we have played defensively all year. 8-0! This is uncharted waters for a new program. We're going to sit back and enjoy this for a day then get back to work starting Monday. I also want to wish my congratulations to Coach Gayle on the birth of his child yesterday."
Thomas improved to 8-0, 1-0 in TSC play, on the season sending St. Thomas to 3-3, 0-1 in TSC play.
The Night Hawks return to the court on Saturday, Nov. 29 when they host Pensacola Christian. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. at the TU Gymnasium. The game will be broadcasted live on
