Southeastern University (8-1, 1-0) edged the Thomas University Night Hawks Men's Basketball team (7-3, 0-1), 76-74, in overtime of the Sun Conference opener for both teams this afternoon at the TU Gymnasium.
With the teams tied at 74 in overtime, Southeastern knocked down a two point field goal with 3.1 left to take a two point advantage. On the inbounds, TU drove to mid court and shot up a prayer at the buzzer that went unanswered as the attempt sailed wide of the basket to seal the game for SEU.
In their first overtime action of the year, TU opened up the lead to start the extra time but would not be able to gain much more momentum as SEU responded to tie and then take the lead. The Night Hawks responded and would tie the game at 74.
Southeastern took a one point lead into the half after starting the game quickly and eventually leading by as much as nine. A dominant run to open the second half saw the Night Hawks open up an eight point advantage with 13:51 to play. With TU down by four with 1:10 to play, senior forward
Justyn Watkins knocked down a two and converted a free throw for a three point play to bring the Night Hawks within one. A defensive stop by TU led to a lay-up by junior guard
Max Grace to give Thomas a one point advantage with 13.1 to play. With SEU playing for the last shot of the game, the Fire drove to the basket and earned a trip to the charity with 1.9 remaining after the Night Hawks were called for a blocking foul. Southeastern knocked down the first shot to tie the game but saw their next shot bounce of the rim. TU grabbed the rebound to take the game into overtime.
Watkins led the scoring for the Night Hawks with 20 while Grace added 19. Sophomore center
Andrea Robinson contributed with a double-double (10 points, 14 rebounds).
TU will next travel to Monroe, LA to face NCAA D1 University of Louisiana – Monroe on Monday December 9
th at 8PM.
