Box Score
A golden goal by TU senior midfielder
Danny Zevallos, just 3:58 into overtime, propelled Thomas Men's Soccer (13-3-2) into the 2013 Sun Conference Tournament Semi Finals with a 1-0 victory over #7 seeded Warner University (7-8-2) on Saturday afternoon at the TU Soccer Complex.
Zevallos, who entered the game for the first time in overtime, made the most of his time when he found a rebound inside the Warner box after a shot by sophomore forward
Jarrod Ingram was blocked. The senior from West Palm, FL than deposited the loose ball in the Warner net for his first goal of the year.
Warner nearly took the early lead, just ten minutes into the game, but a header inside the TU box was saved by senior goalkeeper
Andi Hoffer. The Night Hawks had two golden opportunities in the first but were unable to convert either and the teams took the scoreless tie into the half. Thomas took the game right from the start of the second half and once again allowed scoring opportunities to slip away. Warner took control of the game half way thru the half and nearly took the lead but a goal was disallowed after the WU goal scorer was ruled to be off sides. The teams exchanged control of the game over the final 15 minutes of regulation. TU outshot Warner 13-6 and had six shots on goal, with the WU keeper collecting five saves while Hoffer finished the game with two saves for the shutout.
TU advances to the semi-final round, with their first post season TSC victory, after falling last year in OT to Northwood University in the quarter final round of their first ever post season game in league play. Thomas will face #6 Southeastern University who defeated #3 Webber International University 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. Embry Riddle University, seeded #1, will host the TSC Final Four next Friday and Saturday in Daytona Beach, FL, after defeating #8 Florida Memorial University in the #1 vs. #8 match-up. Riddle will play the winner of #4 SCAD-Savannah and #5 Northwood University.
